Know Your Neuro

The Conroe ISD Guidance & Counseling Department will be hosting two presentations of Know Your Neuro: Brain-Based Parenting Strategies with Dr. Crystal Collier Wednesday, May 7, at Stockton Junior High and Wednesday, May 14, at The Woodlands College Park High School. Both presentations are from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Parents, caregivers, and school staff who understand children's neurowhereabouts (phases of brain development) can shape executive functioning skills more effectively. Dr. Collier will define brain-based parenting and how to easily integrate brain-savvy prevention skills into daily practice. In this presentation, Dr. Collier will describe the effects of high-risk behavior such as alcohol, drugs, technology overuse and more on the developing brain and the parenting strategies that increase youth skills and empower parents.

Dr. Collier, herself a person in long-term recovery, is a therapist and educator whose comprehensive prevention model, which teachers the neurodevelopmental effects of risky behavior to students, school staff, and families, was selected for the Prevention and Education Commendation from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. She received the Torch Bearer Award from the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals, Outstanding Research Award from the Association of Alternative Peer Groups, and voted Counselor of the Year by the Houston Counseling Association.
